In the darkness

The fear of darkness and not knowing what lies ahead.

This photo captures a pathway in a cornfield that was turned into a corn maze. The photo (figure 7) leaves an unsettling aura, even though it is only darkness surrounding the corn maze, but the darkness is the ultimate factor that brings out the haunting atmosphere in this instance. According to Emanuel (2017), humans fear what cannot be seen because everyone’s visual sense disappears, and no one can sense who or what is around, which is why humans rely on sight and visuals to help protect themselves from harm. In the photo (figure 7), the darkness that lies ahead of the pathway leads to the unknown, another item humans find unpleasant because one cannot prepare for what is to come. Along with the darkness, the corn stalks in the dark also give an unsettling feeling. The physical feature of the corn stalks is taller than an average person, and the corn stalks are very dry and portray a lifeless aura due to the colour of the corn stalks.

A photo can provide people with an image of what was present at a specific time, but the image is fixed at that frame and time. Due to the freeze frame of the photo, the haunted feeling arises from the unknown background of the photo. The brain will start to seep into a field of fiction, almost as if it is by law, and create details or stories for the brain to comprehend the unknown (Baetens, 2019). People will start looking at the photo and begin to generate details and information to fill the void of the story behind that photo to try to understand a deeper meaning beyond the freeze frame.
